Jorge Rossy :
Early life
Rossy was born in Barcelona. He started playing drums at age 11.

Later life and career

Between 1980 and 1989, Rossy toured and recorded extensively with several musicians in the Spanish jazz scene, as well as with internationally acclaimed artists such as Woody Shaw, Kenny Wheeler, Jack Walrath, Dave Schnitter, Sal Nistico, Sean Levitt, and others. In 1989, he moved to Boston to study trumpet at Berklee College of Music. In Boston, Rossy became the drummer of choice for many of his peers, and joined the Danilo Perez Trio for gigs in Panama, France, Boston and New York. He subsequently joined the Paquito D'Rivera Sextet for two years.

In 1991, Rossy moved to New York City, and played on several early recordings of many of his Boston contemporaries, including Mark Turner, Chris Cheek, Seamus Blake, Kurt Rosenwinkel. He also accompanied several other musicians then living in the New York, including Brad Mehldau, Ethan Iverson, Reid Anderson, Avishai Cohen, Joe Martin, and Freddie Bryant.

In 1995, Rossy started touring and recording extensively with the Brad Mehldau Trio.[1][2] He has also toured and recorded with The Bloom Daddies, an electric band composed of Chris Cheek, Seamus Blake, Jesse Murphy and two drummers, Rossy and, initially, Dan Reiser, but subsequently with Tony Mason.[3] Rossy has also worked and recorded with Joshua Redman, Bill McHenry, Bruce Barth, Mike Kanan, Ben Monder, Nat Su, Steve Wilson, Mark Johnson, Larry Grenadier, and Ben Street.

Rossy moved back to Barcelona in 2000, to raise his family and to shift his focus to piano. Since then, he has been playing and recording on piano with the Jordi Matas Quintet and the Joe Smith Septet, and has participated in several projects with Guillermo Klein, including performances at Merkin Hall in New York[4] and at the Library of Congress Auditorium in Washington, DC.[5]

In 2006, Rossy recorded his first album as leader, with Albert Sanz on Hammond organ and R J Miller on drums.[6] His second album, featured the same rhythm section but added Chris Cheek on saxophone and Felix Rossy on trumpet.[7]

As a pianist, Rossy has toured Spain, the United States, Morocco, Italy and Basel, Switzerland. Rossy has continued to support other musicians on drums, including the Lee Konitz and Ethan Iverson quartet,[8] Charlie Haden's Quartet West and Land of the Sun Septet, Carla Bley's Liberation Orchestra, Joe Lovano’s Quartet Europa, the Kurt Rosenwinkel Quintet, the Seamus Blake Quartet, Trio 2000 with Chick Corea and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, and another trio with Brad Mehldau and Charlie Haden.[9] His first recording playing the vibes was Stay There, with saxophonist Mark Turner, guitarist Peter Bernstein, bassist Doug Weiss, and drummer Al Foster.[10]

Raised in Chicago, Illinois, Weiss has lived and performed in the New York City jazz scene since graduating from the William Paterson College jazz studies program in1988.

His first International travel was to Japan with the legendary singer Joe Williams in 1991. Joe announced Doug as follows: "He comes to us from a different Tribe; But he swings like one of us. Doug Weiss at the bass."

In 1995 Weiss recorded the first of two critically acclaimed Blue Note records under the leadership of pianist Kevin Hays. His relationship with Kevin, both intuitive and visceral, continues to the present with 10 cds recorded and many appearances in the United States and abroad.

In 1996 began Doug Weiss' association with legendary drummer Al Foster. Al's band has toured the world, playing more than 1000 concerts and recording 2 cds to date. Their performances have been reviewed favorably by DownBeat, Jazz Times, and the New York Times.

In 2003 he was tapped by drummer and producer Brian Blade to record Lizz Wrights' critically acclaimed debut album "Salt' (Verve) and toured extensively in support of that project. He also toured Europe and played the Village Vanguard with Brian Blade and the Fellowship band.

In addition to these bands he performs with guitarist Peter Bernstien's "Monk" project, with long-time friend and section mate Bill Stewart.

Recently, Weiss was featured, along with Billy Drummond and John Scofield, on Eddie Henderson's release "For All We Know" on furthermore records.

In 2010 he began working with pianist Marc Copland, touring Europe in trio format and with the collective band "Crosstalk", featuring Victor Lewis, Greg Osby, Copland, and himself. Their eponymous Cd has just been released on Piroutte records.

He is also member of the band "Wayfarer", a collective featuring Timothy Hill, Jeff Haynes, and Brandon Ross.

He continues to circulate in the New York club scene, with regular appearances at Smalls, Smoke, the Kitano, the Blue Note, Iridium, Birdland, and the Village Vanguard with the likes of Mike Moreno, Sam Yahel, Bruce Barth, Gerald Clayton, Chris Potter, Jim Snidero, and Francisco Mela.

Doug Weiss has also performed and recorded with such notable figures as Toshiko Akiyoshi, Lee Konitz, Jacky Terrasson, Eddie Henderson, Lew Tabakin, Walt Weiskopf, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and Joshua Redman.

Weiss currently resides in the Hudson River Valley, and is engaged in creating a new work by folk legend Pete Seeger, which is being produced by percussionist Jeff Haynes. Their previous effort, "Tomorrow's Children", won a Grammy for best children's album in 2010.

Weiss continues to be a popular attraction at the New School, where he has taught Ear Training, Theory and Performance, the Wayne Shorter Ensemble, and private lessons since 1995.

In 2004 he was invited to join the Faculty at SUNY Purchase, where he teaches private lessons and Ensemble class.

Al Foster
Al Foster (Richmond, 18 gennaio 1943) è un batterista statunitense, noto soprattutto per la sua lunga collaborazione con Miles Davis tra la metà degli anni settanta e quella degli anni ottanta. Foster fu anche uno dei pochi amici che Davis continuò a frequentare durante il suo ritiro alla fine degli anni 70

La carriera di Foster, che è un polistrumentista (suona anche il sassofono, il pianoforte e il basso) cominciò precocemente a New York nei gruppi del trombettista Blue Mitchell[2], e Hugh Masekela nel 1960. Negli anni seguenti fu nei gruppi di Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock e Sonny Rollins, collaborando occasionalmente con altri importanti musicisti jazz tra i quali Horace Silver, Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Hutcherson, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Randy e Michael Brecker, Bill Evans, George Benson, Kenny Drew, Carmen McRae, Stan Getz, Toots Thielemans, Dexter Gordon, Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk, Dave Holland, Buster Williams, Benny Golson, Branford Marsalis, Sting, John McLaughlin, Michel Petrucciani e Dexter Gordon. Dopo l'incontro al Cellar Door, attorno al 1971, Foster rimpiazzò Ndugu "Leon" Chancler, e Jack DeJohnette come batterista del gruppo e rimase con Davis fino al suo ritiro (che durò cinque anni), continuando a frequentarlo anche durante la lontananza dal mondo della musica e divenendo il batterista del gruppo che Davis formò al suo ritorno nel 1980, rimanendo nel gruppo fino al 1985.

« Al Foster lasciò il gruppo perché non gli piaceva lo stile di batteria che avevo in mente. Il rock non gli è mai piaciuto. Io gli avevo chiesto più volte di suonare un certo backbeat funky, ma lui non mi stava a sentire, così a un certo punto feci venire mio nipote Vincent Wilburn.[1] »

Dopo la separazione da Davis (con cui ritornò brevemente nel 1989 per incidere l'album "Amandla"), Foster continuò una carriera da sideman di lusso, con decine di registrazioni al suo attivo, pubblicando anche un disco da leader nel 1997.

Foster è ancora attivo e appare spesso in concerti sia come side-man che a capo del suo quartetto-quintetto ingiro per il mondo. Il quartetto è nato con Doug Weiss al contrabbasso Kevin Heys al pianoforte e Chris Potter al sassofono, ha variato il formazione con la sostituzione di Potter con Eli Degibri al sassofono ed il susseguirsi di pianisti quali Aaron Goldberg, George Colligan, Gary Versace, David Bimbaum ed altri. Il quartetto sovente diventa quintetto con l'aggiunta di Eddie Henderson alla tromba ed al flicorno, altre volte diventa un pianoless trio.
